Semaglutide is the generic name for Ozempic and Wegovy. It is in a class of drugs known as glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) agonists. Tirzepatide is the generic for Mounjaro and Zepbound. It is also a GLP-1 receptor agonist but it targets an additional receptor, the glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP). Because Tirzepatide targets two receptors, it has the potential to have greater weight loss effects than only one receptor.

Both Semaglutide and Tirzepatide have the same side effects. Clinical studies show an average weight loss of 10-15% for Semaglutide and 21% for Tirzepatide.
